Zion or Sion

History: (Heb probably 'fortress' or 'rock')

 

Term used in the Hebrew Bible and Jewish literature in various ways: for one of the hills in Jerusalem; for the mount on which the Temple was built; for the Temple itself; and symbolically for Jerusalem or even Israel as a whole. Today 'Mount Zion' usually denotes the south-west hill in Jerusalem just S of the city wall.
